Web Copywriting really is something you shouldn’t be afraid of.
No matter what you think or hear, it can be really easy.
Ok, perhaps not. What was your reaction? What? Copywriting is NOT easy.
Do you see what I mean? Using words to get a reaction helps to create a little engagement with the reader. It can be a lot of fun too. All it takes is just a little time to craft a message or something that can make the reader sit up and take notice.
Fear Can Take Control When you Think Of Web Copywriting
All of us can get afraid – at least until we something often enough to start getting comfortable. That includes me of course!
Stick at it and I promise you that your fear will go away over time (just promise me you will keep this just between us too).
Starting can be the hardest part, but if you have an idea and a topic, just “go with the flow” and let your fingers do the talking. I remember seeing this great advice somewhere. It said: “don’t think about it, ink about it.”
This works for me and it can work for you too. Trust me, if you try it, you will see how it works.
You have heard the old saying “strike when the iron is hot”. Write down your ideas when they are fresh in your mind. It’s such a pain to have a great thought or idea and having to wait to be able to take action on it. You end up saying to yourself: “I was on to something; if only I could remember what it was.” With all the modern technology around us with smart phones and the like, we can always add notes on those devices, which is what I do if I don’t have a pen and paper handy.
Web Copywriting Starts With The Draft
Everything starts with a draft. It’s important that you write a draft edition first and not put your work on public display until you have checked it over. There is nothing that threatens your confidence like an over critical punter. Don’t let these people put you off anyway, but if you check things over first and get the best copy you can, they will have little to “nit pick” through.
Get your work published anyway, even if you feel afraid. You may find that your fears are unfounded and you’re worrying over nothing in particular. You may just have more connections than you expect. Either way, the only way to find out what works is to publish and see.
There those who say: “you need to be inspired before you can write.” Not totally true. After all, are you awake? Take a look around you and you can take inspiration from anything around you. Be observant and pay attention to those things around you. The other thing is, don’t forget to search!
There is no shortage of information online, so you don’t really need to copy other content. It may be easier for you to do this, but when you put your own “stamp” on things, it will be YOU that the reader connects with not the person who actually wrote it. Build your reputation with integrity, because you can be found out. It’s not worth cutting corners to try to make a buck and then lose out because people see you as fake.
It may be that you use the odd “swipe” file when you start out. Even so, you can rewrite the main body of content, keeping the same theme and yet alter it enough to be “yours”. Stand out from those who use these files and be more unique. People will connect more with those who are unique.
When you are unique your visitors become your audience, then they become your fans and fans return again and again to read your stuff. They remember who you are and even remember your website too! That is really something special.
Be Prepared To Learn Good Web Copywriting
Good copywriters work their craft and invest their time learning and developing those skills.
You may be terrified of web copywriting (I am too by the way) because of the way you need to structure the content. Then there’s the punctuation and grammar. The fear will try to put you off, but don’t let it!
Always look to improve so you can write the best copy you can. Everything comes with practice. The more you do, the better you get! You may find that you can have some fun seeing how you develop and improve along the way.
Web copywriting takes a little effort and learning, but the rewards can be very satisfying. Keep at it and you’ll be surprised how your own skills make a difference. Bit by bit, you will improve.
